The story of Spacetime

This album has been 18 years in the making. The very first musical ideas were developed all the way back in 2007, when a teenage version of myself was spending every waking moment learning how to play Iron Maiden songs, discovering the bizarre world of Steve Vai’s music, and being blown away by the wonders of music theory, with its exotic modes and odd time signatures (thanks to my incredible mom, who gave me the freedom to fully explore my passion, even if it meant playing guitar at 3 in the morning!). By 2009, I had composed many tracks that I planned on recording and releasing as part of an instrumental guitar album.

The dream of making this album was shelved for a decade, however, as my focus shifted, more out of necessity, towards academia (getting a PhD), teaching, performing, and recording and producing music for other artists. All of these experiences were rewarding on multiple levels, but something had still been missing during these 10 years, and it was my amazing wife who helped me realize that I had somehow lost track of what drew me to music in the first place – the guitar – and that I should finally distill the almost two decades of musical exploration into the guitar album I had always wanted to create. (So, if you enjoy the album, you have her to thank!).

Spacetime is the result of this 18-year journey, having been composed, recorded, mixed, and mastered in multiple phases across 3 countries and 4 cities (London, Leeds, Bucharest, and Trento), between May 2022 and September 2024. I’ll use the following pages to pull you into each track’s world by offering insights into their histories, compositional approaches (for all you musical nerds out there), production and recording techniques (can’t forget about the gearheads), while also offering possible ‘meanings’ (the death of the author has been announced for some time now, after all) and explanations for how everything links to the overarching themes of time and space.
